Inspiring stories of success from International Women’s Day 2018

On Wednesday 7th March, Mercedes me was proud to celebrate International Women’s Day with a panel of inspiring women, from a diverse range of backgrounds.

Hosted by journalist Sylvia Jeffreys, we welcomed founding editor of Marie Claire magazine, Jackie Frank; Olympic gold medallist and triple world champion triathlete, Emma Snowsill; former political refugee and founder of immigrant support program Sisterworks, Luz Restrepo and finally, creative director and business owner, Yeojin Bae.The evening presented our speakers the opportunity to share their own personal stories and how they’veovercome adversity in their respective fields to achieve success.

In line with Mercedes me’s core pillar of Community Leadership, the Q&A was centered on this year’s International Women’s Day theme of ‘Press for Progress’ and working towards achieving gender equality. Each or our panel members outlined the importance and effects of positive change from their own perspectives, and how we can all act as role models for the next generation of men and women.

It was an empowering and motivating evening, for both the panel members as well as guests, who were also given the opportunity to contribute and share their challenges and set-backs in the community. The discussion covered topics including the media, social justice, fashion and sport; along with many more in the broader audience discussion.

Throughout the evening, guests were also given the opportunity to purchase handmade goods from the Sisterworks pop-up shop, showcasing the incredible work that Luz Restrepo and the many women in the Sisterworks network have produced. This was a great success and only a few months later, we were fortunate to welcome the team in again as part of our ongoing ‘Meet the Maker’ series.

The International Women’s Day event was an inspiring night for all in attendance and outlined the importance of working towards gender equality for the benefit of the community.

At Mercedes me, we place a strong focus on the importance of Community Leadership and we are proud to shine a light on important topics such as this, through our ongoing events and every day activities. Our goal is to take lead on positive change now and into the future.
